Should Homework Be Done Away With For Children?

July 14, 2017

Should kids not be given homework? An Oireachtas committee will today asses whether we should scrap homework in our schools.

The Irish Primary Principals' Network says the traditional form of after-school assignments as we now it needs to be re-evaluated.

However, the main body for Ireland's primary school leaders believe that a new form of homework should be kept in place to help teach students how to study.

We spoke to President of the IPPN, Maria Doyle who says the traditional idea of giving students homework is out-dated and needs to be reassessed.

A study found students in the primary school years are getting significantly more homework than is recommended by education leaders.

The data shows that homework over this level is not beneficial to children's grades, and there's really a plethora of evidence that it's detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self-confidence, their social skills and their quality of life."

We all had homework when we went to school and most of us turned out absolutely fine.

Some will say that homework teaches children diligence and structure for young children and it should stay that way.

While others may say that children shouldn’t be doing homework after studying for 6 or 8 hours a day and that they should be allowed to have fun and be creative.

Should homework be completely done away with?
